I took the opportunity to play around a bit with this painting. I’ve used salt on a wet surface before but it’s been a while and decided to give it a go again with this painting. I’ve included a step by step progression of the artwork so you can see how it came together. Once I had the first layer of color on the background I sprinkled coarse salt all over it and let it dry. Once dried, I brushed off the salt and it left this kind of abstract, splotchy design. I then added another layer of color to it because the salt leached some of the first layer of color as it dried. I moved on to the flower and finally the hummingbird. And viola! This painting is currently in the small works show at the Copley Society of Art in Boston, MA.
