Love In The Air (wild turkeys)

This handsome male tom turkey has been hanging around with a small flock of hens in the past couple of weeks.  At first, there was only one hen, but now there are seven females with him.  You know what they say… “every girl’s crazy for a “sharp dressed man”!  This one is spending a good deal of time “courting” right now so we see him in full display quite often.   I’m told one of the ways to tell this is a mature tom is the full and even layer of back tail feathers in his “fan”.  If he was a young male, the tail feathers sometimes have gaps and will be very uneven along the top.  Of course, if another male comes along and they “put the knuckles to each other”, they’re apt to lose to few feathers too.  No challengers for this fellow yet.
