There I was, strolling along and minding my own business when suddenly a very large shadow crossed my path. Realizing I was about to walk into something quite a bit larger than myself, I looked up to find a mastodon in front of me. A HUGE prehistoric elephant! Whoa! And before you ask, no…I have not been smelling too many paint fumes. I even managed to get a photo of it before it walked away so I’d have proof! And before you go thinking that was the only surprise, I looked to my left and what to my wondering eyes should appear but a sleigh and… oh, wait, wrong story! I saw no less than what appeared to be a cave bear stalking the mastodon.
Well, before you go thinking I’ve totally lost my senses, these creatures and others, can all be found at the Vermont Institute For Natural Science in Quechee, Vermont. In case you are new to my blog, it’s one of my favorite places to go for photographing birds and learning cool and interesting things about the natural world around us.
